With a mixed population, there are quite a few languages spoken in Belgium. Belgium has three official languages: Dutch, French, and German. Brussels itself is slightly different, being a cosmopolitan city there are quite a few different languages spoken. In Brussels itself, the most common language is French, which about 80% of the population speaks as their first language. Arabic is also very common with a large Muslim population in Brussels. English can be used easily to get by, though.
The food in Brussels consists of food consumed traditionally by Belgian people but has also been influenced by immigration. Bread and potatoes are staple foods while meat also accompanies most meat.4 Belgium is known for its fries, waffles, chocolates, and beer, which are still local favourites as well as internationally exported foods.5 Brussels is known for a wonderful restaurant scene in non-tourist destinations, places where locals eat that serve mostly traditional Belgian food such as seafood (mussels).
Belgium is a cultural hub for the arts, with a wide range of musical and artistic variety. In terms of music, Belgium is known for its classical music as well as its up and coming blues and jazz scene. In Brussels itself, there are numerous musical and concert venues, ranging from the Ancienne, a dynamic contemporary music venue, which is one of Belgium’s most famous, to Palais 12, Brussels’ largest.7
